Notre Dame High School Student wins prestigious engineering award
Theodore Lorenc, a student in year 12 at Notre Dame High School was awarded the John Jarrold Trust Arkwright Scholarship at the awards ceremony at the Institution of Engineering and Technology in London on 3 November.
Arkwright Engineering Scholarships act as a beacon to the most talented STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) students in UK schools and help to ensure that high-potential young people stay engaged in the engineering careers pipeline in the critical 16 to 18 age range. Theodore’s award was one of 425 awarded nationally out of a total of 1,594 applications.
Theodore will receive money to purchase text books, project materials and enrichment experiences to benefit his academic studies and wider experience of engineering. Notre Dame High School will receive funds to be spent on equipment, materials or teacher training for science, design and technology, engineering science, computing and maths, thereby benefitting successive year groups.
Caroline Jarrold, a Trustee of the John Jarrold Trust, said “It was a privilege to meet Theodore and learn more about his plans and ambitions for the future. The award gives him tremendous opportunities to further his engineering interests and I know that he will make the very best of them. Arkwright Engineering Scholars have to go through a rigorous selection process aimed at high-calibre students from across the UK. This Engineering Scholarship encourages students to pursue engineering, computing or technical design at university or through a higher-level apprenticeship and to take up careers in the field.
Each individual Scholarship is sponsored and the John Jarrold Trust is delighted to be able to offer support to a student from Norwich given the trust’s strong connections with the area. Theodore is the twenty-second scholar to have been supported by the trust”.
Kevin Stenson, Interim CEO of The Arkwright Scholarships Trust and CEO of sister charity The Smallpeice Trust said “we are very grateful to sponsors who recognise the potential in these talented students and chose to offer their support to help them develop their skills and fulfil their potential as future leaders in engineering. Each of the scholars gains access to a fantastic range of enrichment experiences including conferences, engineering experience days, mentoring, residential courses and university VIP days”.
